Windows updates won’t install, and icon issues seem to be related

I have found other postings on various websites that have described this exact problem I’m having, so I know this isn’t a complete one of a kind fluke, but have not found any solutions anywhere. Almost all the icons on my system are showing the default icon for an “unknown file type”.
