Guess I don’t hang out in best practices much. Just now saw this. Pretty extensive, but I still have some on my list I don’t think I saw already, so here they are (sorry if I do in fact duplicate any):
microsoft baseline security analyzer - scans your MS systems for patch and low-level security compliance.
robocopy - even better than xcopy
dia - for a decent free network diagram designer
fileassasin - kills hard-to-delete files.
reatogo / bart pe - Boots windows pe from usb thumb / optical drives
knoppix - Run linux off a cd!
eraser - Permanently overwrites data to DoD spec
Sandra SiSoft - Helps you gain all kinds of intimate knowledge of a windows system and its hardware.
autopatcher - A website that patches your windows OS in one fell swoop w/o visiting windows update and/or installing WGAy
combofix - Assists in removing malware
MalwareBytes - The best rogue antivirus remover; good at antimalware in general
bootvis - an oldie but goodie - useful for analyzing startup activity.
media player codec pack - having issues when trying to play media b/c you don’t have a codec? Here you go (probably…)
rootkit revealer - the name gives it away.
filehippo ? - Not sure b/c I just learned about from the IT News and Info page today - @ jdorfman posted it. http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/27941 . I told a peer of mine and he tried it - likes it so far.
autostreamer - helps you easily slipstream a windows OS installer to the latest patch level. spiceuser — Best Practices — Reply
