When retiring WSUS, and the desire is to revert clients back to using Automatic Updates (via microsoft.com), what you need to do is explicitly set the “Specify intranet Microsoft update services location” to DISABLED, and ensure that new policy is propagated to all clients. This will then set the registry value “UseWUServer” to dword:0×0 (disabled),
