Windows Update hangs

Hi, When i try to access Windows update explorer hangs. Can anyone please assist me with this? The same behaviour occurs when i try to update defender definitions as well. System: Dell dimension 5150 Windows Vista home premium From the problem reports and solution log: Description A problem caused this program to stop interacting with Windows.
