Windows XP Automatic Updates and Validation

I got a virus/adware on my PC and managed to remove it without too much difficulty. However, Automatic Updates cannot be enabled and the Windows Genuine Validation is not working. I do have a valid copy of XP and SP3 has been installed. I have tried the suggestions that pop up when the validation doesn’t work so
