Not sure how to do this, but here goes. Have a student running XP SP3 who wants to know that she’s up to date with her updates.

Luisa, First, ensure that these Services are set to these Startup types: Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) – Manual Windows Event Log – Automatic Windows Installer – Manual Windows Modules Installer – Manual Windows Update – Automatic (Delayed Start) If they are or were, suggest you clean boot Vista:
I suggest you start by downloading the affected updates from the Microsoft Download Center and installing them manually. They may just work if you do it this way, but if not, at least you’ll get an error message which may be useful. If the manual installation works, but you wind up having the same problem again
I was having this problem also with the 3 updates failing with code 646. I tried the manual download of the patches this worked for 1 of the 3 but the remaining two updates still failed

There seems to be a number of messages related to the KB960089 update. The issue is still unresolved for me. The error code from Windows Update is 64C
