Microsoft Update Team announced few months ago that they will be releasing a new version of Windows Update agent and it is now available as per Calendar of Updates team – Pat: Windows Update Agent 7.4.7600.226 is now available from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949104/ . I’ve heard from several people who got the update installed automatically via Microsoft Update. I myself did not get it automatically; I had to download and install it from the KB link above.

Try doing the updates in Safe Mode. It sounds like the installer is prevented from writing the final entries to the registry by a program (probably your AV software)

You need to manually undo your MS08-078 mitigations

Just as an FYI, for those of you that used Microsoft’s recommended mitigations for MS08-078 . If you unregistered the MSXML Island object you need to manually re-create the registry entries after you install the patch to restore the functionality. The patch does not re-create the registry entries.
