SP3 for Windows XP Failed

In reviewing my Windows Update History, I find that Windows XP Service Pack 3 Failed on 08 21 2008, but several Service Pack 3 Updates have downloaded since that date. Two Questions: 1) Why did the SP3 Update Fail, and 2) Why are the updates downloading and installing even though the Service Package
